Resume Tips for Creative Professionals
If you are hunting for that dream role at a creative company, you are going to want to dust off your old resume and give it a modern refresh. However, how can you make sure that your resume catches your future employer’s eye?
We will look at creative ways on how to write your resume:
Creative resume Do’s And Don’ts
In the creative field, you have to serve as your own publicist and your resume should serve as an example of your talent and reflect your personality.
Use a distinctive type style that stands out yet is easy to read on your resume. Include an elegant design and a well-organized content. Cutesy graphics, unclear illustrations, lots of colors, cartoonish fonts, and slanted type are all signs of an over designed resume.
Content Is Important
Design is a key factor when writing resumes however, it is equally important to avoid falling into the "flash over substance†trap when writing your creative resume. A creative resume requires quality content as well.
Things to include in your resume
A Career Chronology: Show the names of employers/key accounts and dates of employment. Most creatives make a mistake of not including dates or places where they have worked. Freelancers often forget to include the names of a few clients.
A List of Your Publications and/or Awards: some creative professionals fail to include these.
Your Education: Highlight any degree in graphic design or anything relevant to your creative field, and this is even more important if you are a recent graduate.
Computer Skills: If you fail to list your computer skills, the interviewer will assume you do not have these skills versus the other way around. It is also important to include whether your background is Macintosh, PC or both.
Portfolio
It is okay to include a brief project and accomplishment highlights on your resume but in creative fields, a portfolio is the proof. A portfolio is where you prove your value and tell a story as opposed to being just a random sampling piece. You can also design your portfolio as a case study and include your accomplishments such as outcomes/results of campaigns that you have worked on.
