Graduation Speech Outline

A graduation speech is a speech presented to an audience during a graduation ceremony. The aim of a graduation speech is to recognize the grandaunts and wish them well in their future endeavors.

Graduation Speech Outline 

The following is a graduation speech outline:

1. Introduction. The introduction should include:

  • A Hook. This is a sentence or two with strong sensory details that is used to grab the listener’s attention. Focus on helping the listener feel your experience emotionally.
  • Thesis statement. This is used to state the purpose of your speech In two to three sentences

2. Body. The body should include:

The Incident. Describe the Moment. You can achieve this by:

  • Establishing the setting.
  • Clearly stating who was involved.
  • Stating what was said by whom. Recreating dialogue is very effective. Explain what thoughts were going through your mind and what you experienced with your five senses.
  • Clearly show your initial reaction to the moment. Show how you felt and how you responded.

What you learned. Examine the incident from a variety of angles by stating:

  • What lesson you learn learned at a specific moment.
  • How the lesson immediately or gradually evolved for you. That is, how the experience transformed from a chance happening to some broader context.
  • The other meanings, interpretations, or ideas that revealed themselves to you as you reflected upon the experience. You can use a simile, metaphor, or analogy to describe this.
  • Any other similar experiences you have ever had or some that you knew other people had gone through, that you can connect to your own. If there are any ensure that you clearly prove the connection.

How the experience and subsequent reflection changed you personally. You can explain this by stating:

  • How your actions or behavior changed as a result of your experience. Provide specific and meaningful examples to support this.
  • How your view on life has changed as a result of the experience.

The universal truth that you discovered from your experience. You can explain this by stating:

  • How your newfound awareness is going to affect your future decision-making and the way you treat others.
  • How the lesson you learnt applies to your audience, most specifically your classmates as you move on to the challenges of the next part of your lives. Ensure that you do not sound too preachy.

3. Conclusion. Your conclusion should include your closing thoughts. Ensure that you do not repeat what you have already said so far. Include some fresh insight into your conclusion. This could be in the form of advice to others, a quotation from a famous person, or a poem. You must restate the main point of your speech in your conclusion.
