An ad analysis is a special form of market research that is conducted when a product or service is being advertised. Ad analysis has grown over time with the growth of promotion costs.

It is carried out at every stage of the advertising process to avoid making mistakes. The advertising stages include: when the message is developed when the copy is being prepared and after the advertisement runs.

After analysis, the analyst uses different techniques to test how effective an advertising approach is.

Ad Analysis Essay Outline

The following is an ad analysis outline:

1. Introduction

Your introduction should state what the ad is for, give a general summary of the context of the ad, name the company or product, and give a thesis statement. Your introduction could be in any of the following techniques:

  • Narrative introduction.
  • Interrogative introduction.
  • Paradoxical introduction.
  • Inverted triangle introduction.
  • Minding the gap introduction.

In addition, your thesis statement should explain what the ad is doing or saying and who the target audience is. You should place it at the end of your introduction or the ad’s description. Your thesis statement could include:

  • Explicit messages. These are the obvious messages.
  • Implicit messages. These are the hidden messages. They are promises that the advertisement seems to make to the consumer.

2. Body

Your body paragraphs should use evidence from the ad to prove your thesis statement.

You should include the following in the body paragraphs:

  • A brief description of the ad. You should reflect an objective account of the features of the ad. You can explain how it looks, who or what it features and what colors appear in it. This section should only explain what the reader would see and not how the ad works.
  • Discussion of the target audience and the publication in which the ad appeared. You should explain what group of people the ad targets. Include the sex, age, class, education, race and marital status of the target audience.
  • Logos/ logical appeals. Explain how the ad uses logos to appeal to the target audience. Write a few paragraphs to express the ad’s use of logical appeals.
  • Pathos/ emotional appeals. Explain how the ad uses pathos to appeal to the target audience. Write a few paragraphs to express the ad’s use of emotional appeals.
  • Ethos/ ethical appeals. Explain how the ad uses ethos to appeal to the target audience. Write a few paragraphs to express the ad’s use of ethical appeals.

3. Conclusion.

Your conclusion should explain the cultural significance of the ad. Highlight the values, attitudes, and beliefs that the ad seeks to achieve.
