To What Writer Would You Award a Prize? Essay Sample

Writing contest is an important factor in a writer’s pursuit of a successful writing career. The fame and recognition that come along with winning awards (without mentioning the prize money) can drastically boost the writer’s self-esteem –encourages self to do better, engages more on writing, and shell out enough time on reading for a better effectual writing result. But what kind of writer deserves to be awarded a prize?

Undeniably, writing is becoming a loud voice of expressing innumerous unspoken words from everyone –men, women, parents, children, poor, rich, a degree holder, and an undergraduate person. This gives ear to those disregarded and expressed but unheard suggestions, opinions, ideas, and thoughts and even the astonishing covert knowledge of multifold. Along the lines of other terms, this is a real-life "Time to Shine” moment of every writer in every writing contest. However, writing novels, articles, poetry, essays, and others is not just as easy as eating pie or ordering a pizza in a well-known food corner. This takes time, effort, and personal experiences. As Demian Farnworth posted on his blog entitled What Makes a Good Writer? wrote: "The typical list on writers usually revolves around the habits common to a lot of professions –obsessions, perseverance, getting up early, reading a ton, and so on.” This means to say that we need to expend more time from the very moment we decided to write to the moment we brought the outcome and finished it. Correspondingly, the idea of Scribendi, in The Ultimate Academic Writing Guide, wrote down the lines: "Thinking about personal experience is an excellent way of starting out a new piece of writing.” And this hits exactly the main purpose of writing –to give your life to what you wrote and to let your writings give you life.

Connection. Writing is not just about creating a group of words and joining and arranging them together to make sentences and paragraphs. Instead, a process of putting ideas into words and arranging them to help the readers see, create, and explore new connections not just between the words and the readers but between the readers and writers themselves. It is often through the act of writing that we begin to effectuate the logical relationships that develop the idea into "something” that someone else may receive and perhaps find interesting.

While on the other hand, writers write to compete. This prompts quite a few to think that it’s just about money –that it always talks about prizes.  But, being in a competition is both a privilege and honor for the reason that writers write not just to showcase talents but also to be heard and to be understood through writing –the feelings, the inside thoughts, the story behind every line, and the heart who is always dedicated to writing. In addition, writing contest expresses expanded peculiar emotions –more than awards, more than money prizes, more than fame and recognition. It is always far more interesting when writers focus more on the things that can’t be seen but can be felt, and not just in material things. And I think, most people misunderstood that thought but award-winning writers know better than that.

This topic reminds me of one of the most prestigious awards for writers –the Nobel Prize. It was first awarded into Swedish literature and gain more or less $1 million cash. This, I think one of the best unimaginative awards for a simple writer. However, if I would be asked to award a writer a prize, I would definitely choose the one who has a heart. The one with or without a great name in the writing industry, a prominent writer or just an ordinary undergraduate person, either a beginner or a professional but the one who uses a heart on writing. The one who has the best connections, the one whose words sounded like a roaring voice of a lion, the one who has the ability to touch, kill, change, and has the ability to fit in the readers’ shoes.

Taking everything into account, the best reward for all the toil writers does is receiving an award –whether a well-known award or a prestigious one or even not. Countless people start writing with an aim of receiving a reputed award, and for writers, appreciation is the greatest motivation of all and every aspect. Appreciation that comes from the ones who are closely related to the –friends, family, co-workers. And since writers are vastly appreciated, the self-esteem will be boosted and even the writing skills as well –the expressions and connections. On my last view, as this very moment, this novel pandemic and the number of cases that arise, what evokes writers from the past years to this situation is not money prizes nor material awards but appreciation itself –the emotional wealth matters most. As a Nigerian novelist, poet, and critic, Chinua Achebe, says: "I believe myself that a good writer doesn’t really need to be told anything except to keep at it.” There’s nothing more valuable award to every beginner writer than appreciation. Same as there’s nothing more deserving writer to be awarded than the one who knows how to appreciate and is happy to be appreciated.
