The Role of Discipline in Fostering Personal Development in Life Essay
Discipline is a central pillar in personal, family, work, lifestyle, and social lives. Being a disciplined person is important for achieving success in every area of life (Christina 7). This is particularly true in the current era of modern civilization. There are two types of discipline that enable people to go along with their daily activities. The first one is an internal discipline which is the ability to use one's reasoning to choose an appropriate course of action regardless of personal desires. The second type is external discipline. This refers to the act of conforming to social expectations and dictates of the law of the nation, religion, organization, or education institutions. It is crucial to be disciplined in order to engage in daily activities efficiently with effective results and hence improve one’s life.
Having defined goals in life motivates and keeps people striving towards them. The achievement of a set goal defines success for the person pursuing it. The level of disciplined determines how much one achieves in what they are striving for (Dobson 6). Disciplined people stay focused on their goals, they pay attention to what has to be done to achieve their goals and keeps doing it. They are able to restrain themselves from personal desires that might stray them away from their ambitions. This unwavering focus equips them with the strength to keep even when situations are not favorable. A disciplined student will wake up on a chilly morning despite the warmth in bed. Achieving a goal, therefore, demands discipline all along in order to see the desired end results.
People constantly make choices in their lives to determine an appropriate course of action. A choice made will have a negative or a positive consequence (Christina 15). Our decisions influence our actions, therefore, making the appropriate choices in a situation is important. Being disciplined equips one with the ability to decide the appropriate course of action. Consequently, a disciplined person tends to think before acting. This allows the individual to consider the possible repercussions of different reactions to an issue. Through this conscious action and decision-making, discipline enables individuals to focus in a direction that is more likely to improve their life.
Dedication and commitment allow people to pursue long-term goals in their lives. Striving for short-term gratification signifies a lack of commitment (Dobson 4). Remaining committed to a task demands discipline to see it through to the end. Giving up happens when a person cannot withstand the turmoil’s in the process and loses focus. A disciplined soldier will remain committed to training despite hardships along the way. In the end, they come out refined and ready for the battlefield. Achieving meaningful success commitment that is gained from a disciplined mind.
Lack of self-control hinders achievement in life. Control over one’s self is a demonstration of discipline. It is a great virtue to behold in life. Self-control will allow a person to disengage from those activities that do not help them develop and instead focus on those that do. Control of one's impulses ultimately enables an individual to have a sense of independence (Dobson 45).managing tasks and accomplish them in time is the character portrayed by a self-disciplined person. Consequently, the person experiences less mental stress and has time for other important activities such as exercising.
Confidence in oneself demonstrates efficiency. Confidence also gains respect for the beholder. Lasting confidence only can be built with discipline (Christina 23). Disciplined will enable you to know what to do and say in different situations. Most important is that being disciplined ensures enough preparation in readiness for meetings. This builds up personal confidence as a result, the individual is able to present themselves well and increase their chances of having opportunities. They stand from the crowd.
Good habits are necessary for personal well-being.it is unfortunate that people neglect their personal wellbeing and became consumed by their daily activities. Having the discipline to engage in habits that have positive effects in life requires consistency (Dobson 32). Examples of simple yet hard to accomplish good habits include eating a balanced and healthy diet, productive relationships, and exercising. Developing these habits through discipline can enable a person to a lead stable, healthy, and structured life. This would increase productivity as it is more effective to work when one is in good health, mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Human beings are social beings. They interact at home, workplaces, on the streets, and other social areas such as markets and churches. In order to relate with others, regarding their rights and interests is important. To create a conducive coexistence environment, it is paramount to demonstrate discipline in character (Dobson 17). Adhering to agree social norms such as the use of respectful language enables people to be socially accepted. Healthy relationships allow people to help each other and learn from one another. A team that works together is more productive at the workplace and any other place.
Discipline plays a vital role in personal development. It is important for achieving goals, relating with others, and physical, mental, and emotional well-being. On top of helping a person improve their life, it also keeps the person out of trouble. Therefore, it is an indispensable tool for personal development.
