My Favorite Subject

Throughout a student’s academic journey, they will find a subject they excel in. This tends to be their favorite subject, whether it is in academics or arts. What’s fascinating is that this subject usually shapes that student’s walk of life, specifically their career. However, not everyone chooses to make a career of their favorite subject. Personally, I have always excelled in English, specifically writing papers. This has allowed me to communicate my thoughts to a reader and gain the skill and confidence to thrive in subjects other than English. It has also been a bridge to other opportunities out of school that has allowed me to get the job, relationship, and career path I desire. That is why English is my favorite subject.

One of the first things that brought me to appreciate English as a subject is the new thoughts, ideas, and ways of thinking you gain from reading literature. In high school, you’re introduced to timeless novels such as The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Scarlet Letter. These historical-fictitious pieces allow you the travel back in time, develop a relationship with the characters, and explore what the author is trying to communicate to you as the reader. After each novel, you feel as if you ended a long yet short journey and are ready to start another.

Another reason why English is my favorite subject to study is due to the fact it is now the language of the world. Globally, English is found in almost all international communication, interaction, advertisements, business, and science. With advances in technology, English has also become the center of the internet, television, press, publishing, and even international trade. Being able to understand and speak English has become not only a skill but a door to many opportunities (Melitz 2).

As I mentioned earlier, English has allowed me to enhance my creativity and my communication skills. This has translated into other areas of my life that I’m passionate about, such as psychology and medicine. As a psychology major, I’m constantly reading arduous articles that require a lot of attention and thinking. Being able to translate these articles into words that the everyday reader can understand requires having a high-level understanding of English. The more I’ve improved my English skills, the more I’ve been able to expand my abilities as a researcher in the scientific community.

Once I’ve moved onto medical school and start working with patients, that is where my love for English is even more in the picture. Being able to interact and communicate confidently with patients is a top priority and affects both patients’ satisfaction and the quality of medical services they receive. As a healthcare worker, communication represents an essential clinical skill that involves understanding the patient’s perspective, establishing a therapeutic relationship, exploring emotions and thoughts, and guiding the patient towards improving their overall health (Chichirez and Purcărea 119).

But the usefulness of English isn’t limited to the career and academic paths I’m taking, it is able to assist anyone with their own desired path. The job market nowadays is global, and many companies need employees who can communicate effectively with clients and partners across the globe (Abdul Kadir 263). Most of the time that involves finding employees who not only speak English but who can effectively use it to do business. Gaining new job opportunities, seeking promotions, or trying to keep your professional options open all start with your ability in English. In an international career English translators, teachers, and marketing professionals are constantly sought out. If you speak another language and know grammatically correct English, it will help you become a better and desired employee and an overall well-rounded individual (Kelly). This will allow you to communicate effectively to form positive relationships not only with your boss or coworkers, but with other important people in your life like your partner, family, and friends.

Although I am studying psychology as a college student and hope to pursue a career in medicine, English has remained a focal point in my educational journey. Due to its importance in today’s society, it is an opening to getting into schools, new career opportunities, and the leading language of the internet and even the entertainment business. Almost every class you take in your academic career requires you to use the skills you have learned in English. Whether it is writing a research paper, constructing a speech, or a group discussion, English is at the center of it all and remains my favorite subject.

About klaayo

I have currently completed my pre-medicine courses and will receive my bachelor's degree in psychology this fall. I have spent the last two years researching for the psychology and neuroscience department at La Sierra University, and have written multiple research papers. All of these papers were APA style, and I was required to memorize the latest APA handbook (APA 7). I have also been a TA for the past year assisting students in APA/MLA format and grading their papers and essays based on format, style, grammar, and content.
