Essay Sample on Importance of Trees

We have all seen trees growing at home, school compound, along the streets, and in the parks. When trees grow together in a large area, they make up what is known as a forest. An excellent example of a forest is the Amazon forest in South America. Apart from simply being part of nature, trees play a vital role in sustaining the survival of humans and animals on earth. Trees have always been a good source of useful products such as food, shelter, and medicine that are required by humans and animals to live comfortably. They also help in preserving the environment and promoting the formation of rains that make it possible for all living things to survive.

  1. Protect the Environment

Trees help protect our environment in various ways. They clean the air we breathe by taking away the toxic carbon dioxide and releasing out oxygen during photosynthesis. Oxygen is a very important element in the life of all animals because it is the air we breathe in. Therefore, without trees, it would be impossible for animals to survive on earth. In addition to this, trees play a significant role in protecting the land from destruction due to continuous erosion. Their roots go deeper into the soil and hold the soil particles to prevent them from being carried away by wind or water. Trees also create a protective cover that prevents excessive heat from the sun from reaching the surface of the earth. Thus, trees help shield the underlying vegetation and animals from being burnt to death by the scorching sun.

  1. Source of Food and Medicine

Trees are major sources of food and medicine for both humans, animals, and birds. Many animals like giraffes, elephants, and goats eat leaves and twigs from the trees as food. The fruits from trees are also eaten by many birds, rodents, and humans for food. Some examples of fruits that humans eat from trees are pears, oranges, mangoes, guavas, and coconuts. For many years, people have used various parts of certain trees such as leaves, barks, roots, and branches from trees to make medicines to cure illnesses. These parts of the medicinal trees are usually boiled in water, chewed, or rubbed to provide relief or cure a sick person. Trees are used by people around the world to treat many illnesses such as headaches, toothache, stomach problems, wounds, diabetes, and fever. For example, the cinchona tree is used to make quinine medicine, which was previously used to treat malaria. The leaves, bark, roots, and seeds of the neem tree are also considered effective in treating over forty different types of illnesses.

  1. Provide Shelter and Shade

Trees provide shelter and shade for humans and animals. We use timber from trees to build the houses where we live in. For example, timbers are used for roofing, making doors and windows, and poles for many houses. Leaves and branches from trees are used by birds to make their nests, which are also supported on the trees themselves. Many birds and insects also sleep on the branches and trunks of the trees. Trees provide human beings with shade from the hot sun and rain. Whenever we visit the park, we usually go and sit under a tree to cover us from the sun.

  1. Formation of Rain

Trees play an important role in the formation of rainfall. The roots of the trees absorb water from the ground. This water then moves up the trunk of the tree to the leaves where they are released into the atmosphere as water vapor. This process is known as transpiration. The tiny water droplets then collect in the air to form clouds. Once the clouds are fully formed, they condense back on earth as rainfall. This movement of water from the ground to the atmosphere and back to the ground is called the water cycle. All living things like human beings, animals, birds, and fish need water to live. We use rainwater at home to drink, wash our clothes, bathe, cook food, and water our flowers. Therefore, we need to plant many trees to help us have more rainwater to use every day.

  1. Produce Paper

Trees provide us with the paper that we use in our everyday activities. The books we write on, the books we read, and the charts we have on the walls are all made from trees. Without trees, we would not be able to learn how to read or write. Some of the paper from trees is also used to make birthday cards, Christmas cards, and gift boxes. Even the notes of money that we use to buy things are all made of paper that comes from trees. Just imagine how it would be difficult to buy the things we want if there were no trees to give us enough paper to make money.

In conclusion, trees serve an important role in the lives of human beings and animals. They give us food, medicine, paper, shelter, shade, and rain. Trees also help protect our environment and make it more beautiful. It will be impossible for us to live without trees. Therefore, we need to avoid destroying trees. Instead, we should plant as many trees as possible so that we can benefit from them.
