Should the U.S. remain in the United Nations? Essay Example

Should the U.S. remain in the United Nations?

The United Nations came into being in 1945 after World War II. Its motive was to establish greater cooperation among different countries. The United States contributes around 22 percent of the operating budget of the U.N. In the opinion of some Republicans, its positive intentions have been subverted by a globalist mission running contrary to America’s apparent values. The American Sovereignty Restoration Act introduced in March 2019 removed all sorts of involvement of the U.S. from the U.N. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL3) introduced the bill in January 2017.

The ones who believe that the US should exit from the UN think that the latter pursues an agenda that runs counter to what supporters believe should be the policy goals of America. Though the US bankrolls a large chunk of the U.N.’s annual budget, the U.N. continues to promote ideals that attack American Sovereignty. Recently, the U.N. Security Council sided with Palestine. A resolution was passed that condemned Israel’s settlements in Jerusalem. The attack against one of the United States’ greatest allies is an example of the dangerous agendas the U.N. has in store. Some other alarming U.N. initiatives consisted of The Law of the Sea Treaty, the convention of the U.N. Framework on Climate Change’s move to re-establish an international regulation regime to put an end to global warming.

However, the ex-U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted, "The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad!” On being asked by a reporter to follow up, Trump said that the U.S. should leave the U.N. At the same time, he added that the United Nations doesn’t solve problems but rather cause problems. So it’s great if it lives up to its potential. But it would be a waste of time and money if that doesn’t happen.

During his first address in September 2017, Trump thought that the UN did solve problems and that the U.S. supported it. In the address, Trump said that the major portions of the world were in conflict, and some were "going to hell”. "But the powerful people in this room, under the guidance and auspices of the United Nations, can solve many of these vicious and complex problems,” he added.
