How To Study Effectively Using Flash Cards
Flashcards are one of the best study tools because the promote studying through active recall. Active recall is one of the practices through which our brains learn more effectively. However, they may not be effective if you use them in the wrong way.
Below are rules to follow when using flashcards:
1. Cut your cards into half
You want to minimize your expenses since cards are expensive. The best way to do that is cutting your cards into half. In addition, try to write small letters in order to fit a lot of information on one piece of card.
2. Make your own flash cards
Some students like to share their flash cards or use flash card apps that let you download pre-made decks. While using pre-made cards can be useful, making your own cards will serve your brain better.
3. Be concise
Make sure that the information you write on your cards is on point but still accurate.
4. Use colors
You can write your flashcards with a colored marker to make them interesting. If you keep it short, you will have enough room on the card to bump up the stroke on your pen.
5. Mix pictures and words
Adding pictures will make the information memorable. People tend to remember imagery a lot better than they do words. However, this does not mean that you should use pictures only. Our brains work better with both pictures and words.
6. Use The Leitner System
For this system, you have to use a few groups of cards. When you answer cards correctly, the cards move forward and if you answer wrongly, they move back. After going through a stack, you move on to the next one. This means that you review cards that you know and not worry about those that you do not know as much. Eventually you will get all of them.
I hope that these tips will help you make better use of your flashcards in the future.
