Advantages And Disadvantages Of Having A Relationship In College

Pros And Cons Of College Relationships

College relationships are possible but are not easy. You will face challenges even if you and your boyfriend attend the same college. Like everything else, a college relationship has its upsides and downsides. Below, are some advantages and disadvantages of being in a college relationship:

Advantages

 1. You have someone to talk to

There is no doubt that college is stressful. It is always nice to know that someone has your back whether you are fighting with your roommate, having trouble in class or missing your family. A little cuddling will help you take your mind off whatever is troubling your mind. Sometimes your partner will just listen or give you great advice.

 2. You get to learn stuff about yourself

Being in a relationship teaches you a lot about what you want and do not want for yourself. Relationships help you see if you know the kinds of standards that you deserve and how you should be treated.

 3. You do not need to dress to impress

It is always nice to dress up when you are with your girlfriend/boyfriend. However, after long hours of classes, organizations, you just want to wear your sweatpants, a t-shirt, no make-up, and a messy bun. When in a relationship you have already made all the impressions. Now you can be comfortable with one another.

 4. You can have a life of your own

Most people criticize those who are in a relationship in their early 20’s. However, being in a relationship gives you the best of both worlds. You can choose to go out with your girls or hangout with your partner. You can attend events, study abroad, or intern at your dream company. Relationships do not hold you back unless you let them.

Disadvantages

 5. Long distance relationships are hard

Distance can be a challenge for your relationship if you are dating someone from home. You will probably have to miss events to spend time with your partner instead. This however depends on if your partner lives in a distance that you can actually visit.

 6. Partying with single will not be fun

Your single friends will not have the kind of responsibilities you have to someone else like you do. Sometimes, it is fun to go out to a fraternity party or college bar and dance with whomever you want. However, commitments come with expectations and those expectations come with judgments.

 7. You have to worry about someone else

College is a time for you to learn who you truly are. One of the most important things to do in college is set goals and achieve them. Sometimes, being in a relationship can hold you back. This is because you are also focusing on someone else’s happiness.

 8. You miss the ‘dating experience’

Dating can help you learn what you would want in someone when you choose to be monogamous. Dating different kinds of people will help learn a lot about yourself about what you like and do not like about other people and yourself.

Remember that everyone is different and they want different things. Just stay true to who you are and know that it is okay to want to change your needs along the way.
