Writing An UW Personal Statement
All applicants of the university and colleges must submit a written personal statement for the application process. A personal statement is an essay narrating your personal abilities, experiences and academic standings. The reasons of your educational choices and academic accomplishments are highlighted in this context. This is the opportunity where you add your voice to the admission process and show the admission officers why you are the perfect fit for the university. The content and structure of your essay contributes a lot to the quality are relevance of your application essay.
When writing your personal statement you should address the following parts
A. Academic Elements (requisite) - Academic History
- Explain you past college career up to recent; tell us your performance, education history and choices that have influenced in your life.
- All the circumstances that have affected you academic standing either negatively or positively should be put in context. The situations surrounding them should be explained.
- Give the reasons why you are leaving the current program in case of transfer
- State your experiences and career goals.
- Explain your major career aspirations
- Describe reasons for your major
- Describe how will help you achieve your personal, career, academic and personal goals. How will you add value to the college to help you achieve you goals.
B. Personal Elements (requisite) - Cultural Understanding
- Attentively explain how culture has affected you life and how the community has made you to learn about yourself. The challenges you have faced because of culture.
- Educational Challenges / individual Hardships (if relevant)
- Explain any personal challenge that you have encountered in the process of your education and describe how you overcame it. You can also describe how it made you a better person.
- Society, forces, or Volunteer Service (if appropriate)
- You should describe any activities that you were involved in community service. Describe how it affected you and the community,
- Experiential knowledge (if appropriate)
- Explain any involvement in research, volunteer that have contributed to your academic and career goals.
Additional remarks (optional) - If you have, anything that you feel you want the admission officers should add it here. Mention if you have a compelling academic or personal reason on why you want to join the college.
Personal statement - Not only content that is important, but also, punctuation, grammar and spelling are considered in you college application.
